Smart Questions to Ask in Interviews – and Why They Matter

(Candidates) Smart Questions to Ask in Interviews – and Why They Matter - Talent Search Recruitment Agency in Hampshire, UK

We all know that asking questions in an interview is important. But if you’ve ever found yourself worrying "Am I asking the right ones?" — you’re not alone. At Talent Search, we speak to candidates every day who feel uncertain about what they should (and shouldn't) be asking when the tables turn.

So here's a helpful guide to get you feeling confident — and to show interviewers that you’re engaged, thoughtful, and seriously interested.

Ask Questions That Show You've Done Your Homework

Employers love it when a candidate has done some proper research. Not just a quick glance at the homepage — we’re talking thoughtful questions that show you’ve dug a little deeper.

Try:

  • "I read about your recent campaign launch for [client]. How did the creative process work across departments?"

  • "I saw you’ve been shortlisted for a design award – congratulations! What do you think made that project stand out?"

This shows genuine interest and proves you’ve done your research. Double tick.

Ask About the Future

Not just your future, but the company’s too. It signals that you're thinking long-term and want to understand the direction you could be heading in together.

Try:

  • "How do you see this role evolving over the next 12–18 months?"

  • "Are there any exciting plans on the horizon for the team or company?"

Ask About How Things Work

You’re not just joining a job – you’re joining a way of working. Get curious about the day-to-day operations and the tools they use.

Try:

  • "What platforms or systems does the team use to manage projects?"

  • "How is creative work typically reviewed and signed off?"

Ask What They Love

One of our favourite questions is simple but revealing:

"What do you personally enjoy about working here?"

It brings a bit of heart into the conversation, and gives you a sense of the company culture from someone living it.

Ask About Company Ethos

If values matter to you – and we think they should – don’t be afraid to ask about them.

Try:

  • "How would you describe the company ethos or culture?"

  • "Are there any internal initiatives or groups that support diversity and inclusion?"

Avoid the Salary Question (For Now)

Yes, salary and benefits are important — but the early interview stage is about what you bring, not what you get. Let your recruiter handle negotiations when the time is right (that’s what we’re here for!).

Remember, interviews are two-way. Asking the right questions isn’t just about impressing the interviewer — it helps you decide if they’re the right fit for you.

And if you ever feel stuck on what to ask or how to frame it, just give us a shout. We’re here to help.
